Mountainair, in Torrance County, New Mexico, was founded in 1903 by John Corbett, Colonel E.C. Manning and former Kansas Governor E.S. Stover. Its early settlement was largely the result of the Homestead Act of 1889, and to its location at the peak of the summit of Abo Pass. Although passenger service to Mountainair ended in the late 1960s, several freight trains still pass through town each day. The community is currently the gateway to the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.
