The resort town of Red River is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Taos County, New Mexico. The town got its start in the 1870s when miners were attracted by gold strikes in the area, and hunters came seeking game. Later, silver and copper were also found. The community was named for the Red River, which flows from the northern slopes of Wheeler Peak through the town. With the closure of the mines, the town has turned increasingly to tourism as its economic base.
