Amityville is an incorporated village within the town of Babylon, in Suffolk County, New York. The area was first settled in 1653, at a time when it was used mostly as a source of salt hay. The village was initially named Huntington West Neck South, as it is on the Great South Bay, and bordering the southwest corner of Huntington South, which is now known as Babylon. Found to be too long a name for a post office, its name was changed to Amityville in 1846, and the land was deeded to Amityville by Chief Wyandanch in 1658. In recent years, the village has become most known as the setting for the novel, The Amityville Horror, and subsequent movies.
