East Greenbush, New York, in Rensselaer County, gets its name from the Dutch phrase "Greenen Bosch," which is the description of the pine forest which covered the land in the 17th century. The first settlement there was in 1630, led by Patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer. It was named Clinton when the town formed in 1855, and in 1858, the name was changed to the current one.
