The southwest portion of New York City houses the borough of Staten Island. It is located in Richmond County and is separated from the state of New Jersey by the Kill Van Kull and the Arthur Kill on one side and from the rest of New York by the New York Bay. Henry Hudson established the area in 1609 and called it Staaten Eylandt in honor of the Dutch parliament, the Staten-General.
