Ahoskie is in Hertford County, in North Carolina’s Inner Banks region. Its name came from the Wyanoke Indians, and was originally spelled Ahotsky. It is believed to be the only town in the world with that name. The English spelled the town’s name many ways before settling on the present spelling in 1894, when a post office was established.
