Albemarle is the seat of Stanly County, North Carolina. European settlement of the area came in the mid-18th century, when immigrants of Dutch, Scot, Irish and German descent moved there from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, while immigrants of English backgrounds came from Virginia and the Cape Fear Basin in eastern North Carolina. Its first post office was opened in 1826, although it was known as Smith’s Store. The town was incorporated as Albemarle in 1857.
