Asheville is the seat of Buncombe County, North Carolina. Its history began in 1784 when Col. Samuel Davidson and his family settled on a land grant in the Swannanoa Valley. Soon after building his home, Davidson was killed by a band of Cherokee hunters. His twin brother, Major William Davidson, formed an expedition to retrieve his body and avenge his murder, and members of the extended family settled in the area. First named Morristown, Asheville was renamed for NC Governor Samuel Ashe.
