Bessemer City is in Gaston County, North Carolina. The community had its start in the Ormand Mining Company, which was established by James Ormand, who was granted the land by King George II in 1754. At the time, the land was within Tryon County. When Tryon County was split in 1846, part of it became Gaston County. Bessember City was chartered in Gaston County in 1893. Mr. John Askew Smith was one of its founders. Bessemer City is northwest of Gastonia, and northeast of Kings Mountain.
