Situated west of the confluence of the Tuckasegee River, Bryson City, North Carolina is the seat of Swain County. The town is surrounded by mountains on all sides. After being sold by Big Bear, a Cherokee chief, around 1818, the area that was to become Bryson City changed hands several times but, upon the formation of Swain County in 1871, a portion of the land was sold as the site for a county seat. First known as Charleston, its name was changed to Bryson City in 1889.
