Burgaw, North Carolina was established as a result of The Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad routing its tracks across the Burgaw Creek, where a small trading post had previously existed. In 1854, the post office began to call this location, Burgaw Depot, and the settlement that grew up around it was incorporated in 1879, at which time the name was shortened to Burgaw. Rocky Point is south of Burgaw.
