Canton, North Carolina, the second largest town in Hayward County, was founded in 1889 as Buford. Its name was changed to Vinson that same year, and to Pigeon Ford in 1891. In 1893, the name of the town was again changed, this time to Canton, named for Canton, Ohio, the source of the steel used in building the bridge over the Pigeon River. Canton is bordered on the west by West Canton and on the south by Center Pigeon. Hominy is east of Canton, along I-40.
