Known originally as West End because of its location west of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, North Carolina was settled around 1882 around the State University Railroad. West End was incorporated in 1911 and renamed Venable, but renamed Carrboro just two years later, for Julian Shakespeare Carr, who bought several local buildings in 1909, and began to provide streets and electric power to the community.
