Situated in the Southern Piedmont Region of North Carolina, in Rowan County, the town was known as Savits Mill as early as 1710. Its name was changed to Lutherville in 1846, then to China Grove in 1849, named for a grove of chinaberry trees that once grew near the train depot. Prior to the American Revolution, the settlement served as a stagecoach stop. On October 23, 1896, China Grove became the second RFD mail stop in the United States.
