Named for Richard Clinton, a Brigadier General of the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution, Clinton is the county seat of Sampson County, North Carolina. The first European settlers came to the area around 1740. The community was first known as Clinton Courthouse as there was an earlier incorporated town of Clinton in Matthews County. That town folded in 1822, and Clinton was incorporated in 1852.
