Coats, North Carolina is in Harnett County. The community was named for James T. Coats, who bought seven hundred acres of farming land in Harnett County, and set up a general store, which attracted other farmers, as well as the railroad, and the town that grew up around it. Coats is east of Buies Creek and west of Benson.
