Dallas, North Carolina, was named for George Mifflin Dallas, who was Vice President under James K. Polk. Incorporated in 1863, Dallas is the oldest incorporated town in Gaston County, and served as the county seat from 1846 to 1911. Dallas declined in importance when the town commissioners refused to appropriate money to build bridges over several creeks for the railroad, afraid that the trains would awaken people. Dallas is immediately north of Gastonia.
