Founded as a result of the Murphy Branch Railroad coming into the area in the 1880s, the community was known by a number of names, including Tunnel, Depot, New Webster and Webster Station, until its name was changed to Dillsboro in 1889, when it was incorporated as a town, to honor William Allen Dills, who had selected the site, which was then part of his farm. Located in Jackson County, North Carolina, the county seat of Sylva is one mile east of Dillsboro.
