Dobson, North Carolina was established as the county seat of Surry County in 1853, replacing Rockford, after the southern part of the county was split off to form Yadkin County. Dobson was named for William Polk Dobson, a prominent Surry County citizen, and cousin of President James Polk. Dobson is southwest of Mr. Airy and northwest of Winston-Salem.
