Elkin, North Carolina is a town in both Surry and Wilkes counties. The community was founded at the confluence of the Yadkin River and the Big Elkin Creek, and European settlement began when Alexander Chatham opened a small woolen mill thre in 1877, and was aided with the coming of the railroad in 1890. Elkin is separated from Jonesville, to the south, by the Yadkin River.
