Elon is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina. Home to Elon University, the town was named Elon College until the college became known as a university, at which time the town changed its name officially to Elon. The origins of the town stem from a railroad depot that was built in 1881, which became a shipping point for area cotton mills, and its growth was greatly aided by the establishment of the college there in 1889.
