Garland is in Sampson County, North Carolina. Although the town was not chartered until 1907, the area was inhabited by the mid-1700s, and had a school by the early 1800s. In the late 1800s, the community was known as Sloans Crossroads. Its name was change in 1886, at the insistence of the railroad, as a condition for establishing a depot there. Garland was named for Henry Garland, who was assistant Postmaster General of the United States at the time.
