Gatesville is the county seat of Gates County, North Carolina. The town and county were named for General Horatio Gates, who commanded the American Army at the Battle of Satatoga. In 1780, a courthouse, prison and stocks were built in Gatesville, which was then known as Gates Court House. In 1830, the name of the town was changed to Gatesville. The town is southwest of Easons Crossroads, and northwest of Mintonsville.
