The town of Glen Alpine is in Burke County, North Carolina. The community was originally called Turkey Tail by railroad workers, because of a tree near the railroad that was shaped like a turkey tail. In 1876, the town’s name was changed to Sigmundsburg, after Edmund Sigmum, the co-founder of a mill that was built in the town. The Glen Alpine Hotel was built not far from Sigmundsburg. As the hotel became a popular spot, the town’s name was changed to Glen Alpine in 1883.
