In the late 1830s, the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad was extended to the east of Waynesborough, then the seat of Wayne County. At the intersection of the new railroad and the New Bern Road, a hotel was built and a settlement established itself. This became Goldsborough Junction, which was incorporated and became the county seat in 1847, its name changed to Goldsboro in 1869.
