Granite Falls, North Carolina is in Caldwell County. The town has its origins in an iron works that was built there in 1791, using power created by the flow of water through Gunpowder Creek. When the forge ceased operations, the community that grew up around it remained, and was incorporated as a town in 1899. Prior to its incorporation, the community had been known as Baird's Forge, Catawba View, Lovelady, and Granite.
