Greenville is the seat of Pitt County, located in the north-central coastal plain region of eastern North Carolina, about 85 miles east of Raleigh, and roughly 90 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. Greenville was founded in 1771 as "Martinsborough" but renamed for General Nathanael Greene in 1786.
