Hope Mills, North Carolina is in Cumberland County. Although not chartered until 1891, the town’s roots go back to 1766, when a lumber camp, saw mill, grist mill, and pottery business were established there and, in 1831, the first cotton mill powered by the Hope Mills Dam was completed. Prior to being named Hope Mills, the town had been known as Little Rockfish Village and Hope Mills Number One. Its cotton mill and many other buildings were burned by General Sherman during the Civil War.
