Jackson is the county seat of Northampton County, North Carolina. The town’s origins go back to the creation of Northampton County in 1741 by the Colonial Assembly of North Carolina, when the location was determined as a central site for the courthouse, although a second courthouse was built at a slightly different location in 1819. The name, Northampton Courthouse, was generally used for the town until 1826, when it was renamed Jackson, for General Andrew Jackson, later to become president.
