The city of Marion was planned as the seat of McDowell County because Sam Carson, its founder, didn't want the county seat to be too near his plantation. He contributed fifty acres for a county seat, and the city built up around it, named for Francis Marion, a South Carolina Revolutionary War hero known as "Swamp Fox".
