Morehead City is a port town in Carteret County, forming part of the Crystal Coast. Named for John Morehead, who served as North Carolina governor from 1841 to 1845, the city was intended to become a great commercial city. Morehead and his associates acquired a large portion of the surrounding property and made plans to build a port, connecting it to the North Carolina Railroad.
