Located southwest of Durham and north of Raleigh, Oxford is the seat of Granville County, North Carolina. The town was settled sometime around 1761, when Samuel Benton built a plantation home on a thousand acres there. The county seat was established on one acre of land there in 1764, but the town itself wasn't established until 1811, incorporating in 1816. John Penn, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, resided in Oxford.
