Sanford was incorporated in Moore County in 1874, before the creation of Lee County, for which it is now the seat. The city was founded at the area where the Western and Chatham railroads crossed, and named for Colonel C.O. Sanford, the chief engineer of the railroad. In 1947, the town merged with Jonesboro, but retained its name.
