Williamston is the seat of Martin County, in North Carolina's northeastern Coastal Plain region. It is uncertain when the town was settled, but there was a village there in 1730, called "Tar Landing" by the English settlers, as it was a shipping point for tar, pitch, turpentine, and forest products.
