The City of Bowdon, North Dakota is in Wells County. The community was founded in 1899 by Richard Sykes, a landowner from England who named the settlement after his hometown, near Manchester, England. Bowdon is located near the geographical center of the state. Many of its early settlers came as a result of the Homestead Act of 1862, many of them recent immigrants from Germany, Russia, and the Scandinavian countries.
