Founded in 1883, Burlington was the third of a series of three settlements that included The Forks and Colton, and is the oldest community in Ward County, North Dakota. Until 1888, Burlington was the county seat. Burlington is located on the Drift Prairie of north-central North Dakota, next to the confluence of the Des Lacs and Soutis rivers, in Burlington and Kirkelie townships.
