Founded in 1903, Hampden is in Ramsey County, North Dakota. Established in Northfield Township, Hampden soon absorbed most of the nearby town of Northfield, whose post office moved to Hampden in 1903. Hampden was incorporated as a village in 1917, becoming an city in 1968. Hampden is southwest of Nekoma, northwest of Derrick, northeast of Starkweather, and southeast of Weaver.
