Founded in 1882, and named for Judson LaMoure, a legislator in the Dakota Territory government, LaMoure is the seat of LaMoure County, North Dakota. The city became the county seat in a hotly debated vote in 1884, narrowly beating out Grand Rapids. LaMoure is located along the railroad, between, Berlin, Grand Rapids, and Independence. Lake LaMoure is to its south, while Twin Lakes is north of the town.
