Founded in 1883, Lakota is the seat of Nelson County, North Dakota. The community was named for the Lakotah Indian tribe. Prior to the organization of the town, the land was owned by James M. Howard. Some immigrants had settled in the area before the coming of the railroad, but when the railroad came through in 1883, more immigrants began coming to Lakota. The city is located along Highway 2, between the towns of Doyon and Michigan.
