Situated on the banks of the Maple River, for which it was named, Mapleton, North Dakota is in Cass County. Founded in 1875, Mapleton is one of the oldest cities in the state. Settled in 1870, the town was originally known as Maple River, but its name was changed Mapleton when a post office was established there in 1875. The community was incorporated as a city in 1884. Mapleton is in southeastern North Dakota.
