Sentinel Butte is a small city in Golden Valley County, North Dakota. The community was founded as a railroad stop along the transcontinental rail line of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1880, but it did not become a town site until it was platted and surveyed in 1902. Sentinel Butte was named for the prominent butte three miles to the south.
