Founded in 1883 by August Peterson, a Swedish immigrant, Velva is located in McHenry County, North Dakota. Since its beginnings, Velva has been known as “The Star City” because of its location on the southernmost point of the Mouse River loop, where the river turns to begin its winding back north to Canada. Early cartographers used to mark this spot with a star, leading to its nickname.
