Washburn, North Dakota was founded by “King John” Satterlund in 1882, naming the community for the late Wisconsin Governor Cadwallader Colden Washburn, who was a friend of both Satterlund and the town’s cofounder John Veeder. Washburn is the oldest city in McLean County, and became the county seat in 1883. Washburn is situated on the east banks of the Missouri River, along Highway 83, between Underwood and Wilton.
