Wilton, North Dakota is in both Burleigh and McLean counties. Founded in 1899, Wilton was founded by General W.D. Washburn, a former U.S. Senator and Surveyor General from Minnesota, as well as the principal owner of the Washburn-Crosby Flour Mills, who purchased 113,000 acres of Northern Pacific Railroad grant lands. Washburn was the brother of C.C. Washburn, a Wisconsin governor and congressman, who selected a town site and named it Wilton for a town in his home state of Maine.
