Akron is located in northeastern Ohio, on the Cuyahoga River, between Cleveland and Canton, about sixty miles west of the Pennsylvania border. It is the county seat of Summit County. Although now a large city, the village of Akron was first built, in 1825, to serve people using the Ohio and Erie Canal. In 1833, another village was established just north of the existing village of Cascade which was referred to locally as North Akron. In 1836, the villages joined under the name of Akron.
