Bellefontaine is the seat of Logan County, Ohio. The area was dominated by the Shawnee Nation in the 1760s and 1770s, who built the village of Blue Jacket’s Town, which later became Bellefontaine. It was not unusual for white settlements to correspond to Indian villages. Bellefontaine became a major railroad town in the 1890s. The city is named for the French word that means “beautiful spring”.
