Although it wasn’t incorporated until 1864, Columbus Grove, Ohio had been a community for more than thirty years before incorporation. Located on the edge of the Great Black Swamp on the old National Road that linked Fort Wayne with Fort Findlay, Columbus Grove was the high ground of the swamp, named for a grove of sugar maple trees that were there. Columbus Grove is an incorporated village in Putnam County.
