The city gets its name from a fort that was constructed as an outpost in the War of 1812, named after Colonel James Findlay. The village itself was laid out in 1821, and incorporated as a city in 1887. The song, "Down by the Old Mill Stream", was written by Tell Taylor while fishing along the Blanchard River in Findlay.
