Gallipolis is a village situated along the Ohio River in southeastern Ohio, and the seat of Gallia County. Settled mostly by French immigrants around 1790, its name means "city of the Gauls". After arriving, the new settlers found that they had been sold land that didn't belong to the settler. Many left, while those who remained had either to purchase their land again, from the actual owner, or move an area set aside for them by the government.
