Located along the Cuyahoga River in the northeastern part of Ohio, Kent is in the western edge of Portage County. The city was first settled in 1805, and initially developed as two villages, Franklin and Carthage, which eventually joined together to form Franklin Mills, later named Kent after Marvin Kent, the owner of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad.
